A Hospitalist is a physician who specializes in caring for patients in
a hospital, and usually do not see patients outside the hospital. It is
a specialized field of medicine and is increasingly important
in today’s health-care delivery system.
Most Hospitalists are trained as Internal Medicine or Familty Physicians (also called
“Internists”).The Society of Hospital Medicine, founded in
1997 and headquartered in Philadelphia, is a recognized medical society.
Today, there are more than 10,000 hospitalists in practice who are looked
to by Primary Care Physicians and others to provide consistent, high-quality,
direct patient care in hospital settings throughout the nation.
